What is Triangulation?

Triangulation is bringing a third person into a relationship dynamic, often to provoke jealousy, create insecurity or avoid direct communication.

Triangulation happens when someone uses a third party to influence or control a relationship. That person might be an ex, a friend, a coworker or a stranger. Examples include constantly comparing you to an ex, mentioning how much attention someone else gives them, or passing messages through a friend instead of speaking to you directly.

The purpose is often to create insecurity so you try harder, or to avoid a difficult conversation. It can also be unintentional: people sometimes mention others to seek reassurance or because they do not know how to talk about a problem. Intent matters, but the effect is what you live with.

Healthy relationships can include friends, exes and family without turning them into tools. The question to ask is whether the third person is part of ordinary life or is being used to put you on edge. A pattern of comparison and indirect messaging is a sign that communication is not honest.

Example: Whenever Leila brings up a concern, Omar mentions that a coworker 'never makes a fuss about things like this' and says his ex 'was much more relaxed'. Leila starts to feel she has to compete and stops raising issues altogether.

Signs

  • Frequent comparisons to an ex, coworker or friend
  • Mentioning other people's interest to make you jealous
  • Passing messages through others instead of speaking directly
  • Using other people's opinions to win arguments
  • Feeling that you are competing rather than connecting

What to do

  • Name the pattern calmly: 'When you compare me to others, it makes me feel unsafe.'
  • Ask for direct communication about problems.
  • Keep your own boundaries about who is part of your conflicts.
  • Notice whether the behavior changes once you have raised it.
  • Decide whether the relationship provides the honesty and respect you need.

Frequently asked questions

Is mentioning an ex always triangulation?

No. Mentioning an ex in normal conversation is common. It becomes triangulation when it is used repeatedly to compare, provoke jealousy or control you.

Is triangulation always intentional?

Not always. Some people do it out of insecurity or habit. Either way, it is reasonable to ask for it to stop and to watch whether it does.
